BMW S1000RR

A serious, no-compromise superbike from Bavaria

If you've followed motorcycle racing for the last 20 years, you've probably heard plenty of rumors about a certain Bavarian motorcycle company entering a competitive machine in Grand Prix or World Superbike. These rumors—sometimes founded on spyshots and insider information—usually turn out to be a false glimmer of hope to roundel fans. On April 16th in Munich, BMW Motorrad… Continue

Webber: Button has it in the bag

Mark Webber feels Jenson Button is in a position where he could now cruise home to the Formula One world title.

In taking the chequered flag in Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix for his sixth win in seven races this season, Button built a commanding 26-point lead over Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

Other than the veteran Brazilian, Red Bull's Webber and Sebastian Vettel are the 29-year-old's closest challengers, albeit 33.5 and 32 points adrift respectively.

The duo were second and third in Istanbul, finishing around seven seconds adrift, but as the Australian rightly recognised, Button was "on another level".

The likes of Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Renault's Fernando Alonso have already made it clear the Briton is unlikely to be caught.

Webber also appreciates Button is "in an incredible position".

He added: "To have a 26-point lead is an amazing position to be in.

"But the way the points-scoring system is at the moment, for him to chip away is not that easy if his main competitors are consistent.

"Two DNFs (did not finish) obviously changes things, but there's no question about it, he's in fantastic shape going forward with seven races down and 10 to go.

"Even if he's cruising and picks up a lot of results, rather than being on the top step, it's going to be a long time for people to get that back.

"Finishes are crucial for him, and he's been around long enough to know that."

Webber is refusing to rule himself out of the equation after his second runner-up finish of the year, and with arguably the best car he has driven currently beneath him.

"We are in a position to challenge at most grands prix now, and that is very rewarding for the whole team," added Webber.

"We expected to be a bit closer in Turkey, to be honest. But there was no way anyone was going to beat Jenson.

"It's not that we're going to change our mentality going forward.

"We're doing everything we can to make the car as fast as possible for every venue we go to, and that's starting with the next grand prix in the UK.

"We need to keep going on the path we are, but we need to bite into the back of their (Brawn GP) development if we can somehow.

"We obviously need to do it soon because the more races we do, less follow.

"Everyone is working incredibly hard, but the guy leading the championship keeps going away.

"It wasn't bad for the constructors' (championship) for us, but in the drivers', Jenson has gone away a bit more."

McLaren focusing on next season

Martin Whitmarsh has confirmed McLaren are already ploughing resources to ensure Lewis Hamilton is a title contender next year.

Former team principal Eddie Jordan described the current model as the worst the team have built, while another source labelled it "a boat".

Hamilton's title defence is certainly sinking without trace after a run of three grands prix without scoring a point for the first time in his Formula One career following yesterday's 13th-place finish in Turkey.

A major upgrade is due for the German Grand Prix early next month, although if Whitmarsh has his way then it will be on the car for the next race at Silverstone in 13 days' time.

But with Hamilton 52 points adrift of Jenson Button following his rousing start to the season with six wins from seven races, it is hardly a surprise McLaren are turning their attentions to 2010.

"We've some of our technical big guns on next year's programme because we need to," confirmed Whitmarsh.

"From last year to this there was a very large set of changes, and I wouldn't say circumstances conspired against us, but they were the greatest in the last 20 years.

"It was an ideal opportunity for teams with resources, or because they weren't competing, to steal a march on those pouring resources into the existing car.

"Next year, we've not as large but a relatively substantial change, with a prohibition on re-fuelling.

"Fuel tanks will be 14 to 15 centimetres longer, which might not sound much, but talk to the engineers and it's a very significant and substantial change.

"So we have to take the opportunity of that step change in the rules to make sure we have a competitive car next year.

"We will continue to work on this year's car, but inevitably we've got to now taper development resource into the new car.

"At the moment we're not fighting for a championship. We haven't given up, and we're going to try to understand this car more.

"But we must, must make sure we've a car that's more competitive for next season."

It will not be the British Grand Prix homecoming Hamilton had hoped for on June 21, with all eyes instead focused on Button.

The question being asked now is whether Hamilton is that talented, or whether he simply lucked into a car good enough to win him the title.

Dismissing such nonsensical remarks, Whitmarsh added: "There will always be people who will look at winning in the most competitive car.

"But Lewis has done an extraordinary job this year in what is a new experience for him.

"In the past he has been in the best karts and the best Renault team (Formula Renault).

"He has had an entire career of going to a race track with the firm conviction that if he had the equipment and he did a good enough job, he would win the race.

"Sadly we have not provided him with that this year, and that has been a big learning experience for him.

"It is not an enjoyable experience, but we all learn from these situations and Lewis will.

"He is an extraordinary racing driver and a worthy world champion, so any questions of him have already been answered."

Is McLaren's credibility shot ?

In this week's edition of Engine Block’s "Rumble Strip", we ask: Has McLaren's credibility gone down the drain ?

First, the "spy-gate" saga that saw McLaren fined a record 100 million dollars and disqualified from the 2007 Constructors' Championship after being found guilty of attempting to steal rival Ferrari's top-secret technology.

The drivers got away unscathed, having traded information for immunity, but even though the scandal barely diminished their resolve, it sure sullied Lewis Hamilton's runner-up showing that season.

McLaren continued to attract negative publicity the following year with rumours of Toyota's Timo Glock allegedly getting cash for letting Hamilton pass at the final corner in Brazil which allowed him to secure the championship that year.

It was earlier this season however that the team's travails reached a new high when McLaren admitted to misleading race stewards at the Australian GP. The 2008 World Champion apparently lied outright about permitting Jarno Trulli through during a safety car period.

A drastic restructuring that involved firing sporting director Dave Ryan and Hamilton making a public apology later, McLaren got off easy with a suspended three-race ban for their latest offense but the once mighty champions find their lofty reputation suddenly teetering on its perch.

162 race wins, 12 Drivers' and 8 Constructors' Championships notwithstanding, the British team's long sporting tradition now falls into question. Is McLaren a crew full of cheats or a team of true-blue champions?

Kimi blames poor start on mistakes

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen has blamed costly mistakes for his team's less than impressive start to the F1 season.

But he believes Ferrari still has what it takes to start winning races again.

The Finn has not rediscovered his form like last season and his best finish this year has been sixth at Bahrain.

"We haven't lost anything, it is the same people doing the same things as when we were winning," he explained.

"But we seem to make some mistakes and sometimes you make mistakes more easily when you push harder and try and get back.

"When you are winning it is always easy, you can always be safe with certain things. For sure we could have done many things better this year but we are learning from all the things and I am sure we can get back at that level.

"It is just it seems to take an awful long time but it is not the first time in racing that it happens.

"We know what we need to do, and like I said at some point we will get it back and be where we want to be."

Raikkonen has plenty of work to do if he is to challenge for the world title - he currently sits a massive 38 points behind leader Jenson Button.

The Finn failed to finish in Barcelona but still managed to draw some positives from the performance of his Ferrari.

"What is positive is that the car is stronger than before and we can still improve it a lot," he added. "We are getting where we want to be which is fighting with the guys at the front and that is what we are aiming for.

"We are taking the first step, so if we take something positive out that is a good thing.

"Apart from that it was a difficult weekend for us but hopefully we'll get some better races. We have not been very lucky with many things lately but at some point it will turn and we will be back."

Button: I want to win every race

Jenson Button has vowed that there will be no let up in his bid to win this season's Formula One world title.

Despite six victories in seven races to open up a 26-point lead at the top of the drivers' standings, Button wants more.

The reason being is that as quickly as Button's star has risen this year, he appreciates it could just as easily fall again.

There is no sign of that at present, certainly not after a Turkish Grand Prix triumph yesterday that… Continue

Horner: "We're in this championship"

Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner is anticipating more bruises from Brawn GP this weekend in Monaco.

Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello staved off the anticipated challenge of their rivals in Spain 10 days ago to clinch a one-two and open up a significant gap in both championships.

After winning four of the first five races, Button has a 14-point cushion over Barrichello, with Red Bull duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber a further four and 11.5 points… Continue
